Over 50 years ago, several homes in the Applegarth district were destroyed due to delays in response times of neighbouring fire departments. Vincent Ely, a long time resident of Monroe Township, called a meeting of neighbours to discuss the creation of a Monroe Township Fire Company for the Applegarth region. Soon after, Vincent Ely and 47 other township residents created the Applegarth Volunteer Engine Company #1.

As plans were drawn up for the firehouse, money was raised through fund raising thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary. Township residents, Mr. & Mrs. Cooper, donated the land for the firehouse, which was constructed by our volunteer firefighters. Neighbouring towns donated gear, equipment, and apparatus.

50 years later, and with support of the paid staff at our sister station on Halsey Reed Road, we are still proudly serving Monroe Township – District 2. With the expansion of our township and over 550 calls each year, we ask any resident who is interested in volunteering to fill out an application.
